KCI Airport Runways Closed; Slippery conditions were reported on area roads Thursday

UPDATE 7:45 AM – KCI is open again.

Snow and ice in the northern parts of the Kansas City area led to the runways at Kansas City International Airport being closed.

Further south, icy conditions caused slippery conditions on area highways.

The MCI Airport airport has been closed due to ice contamination on the runways. The crews fought through the night but had to close down for safety. Expect reopening in 45-60 minutes. Check airline websites for the latest flight information.

Officials say they expect the runway to be closed for about an hour.

Dwindling rainfall and freezing temperatures are making the morning commute dangerous.

A number of crashes are starting to pile up, especially in the north early Thursday morning.

Just after 6 a.m., Interstate 635 southbound at Horizons Parkway in Riverside was closed due to an accident.

A short distance away a semi-trailer was sideways on I-635 and Interstate 70 in Kansas City, Kansas.

At 6:45 am, the Overland Park Police Department initiated access incident protocols.

No serious injuries have yet been reported, but motorists are encouraged to slow down and allow more time to reach their destinations.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
