KCPD officer killed in fatal traffic accident at Truman and Benton Blvd

KANSAS CITY, Mo — Kansas City Police say a canine police officer, his canine partner and a pedestrian were killed in an automobile accident at Truman Road and Benton Boulevard at about 10:15 last night.

Police say the crash involved a city vehicle, a police car and a pedestrian.

Police say the officer and his canine companion were on duty and on patrol in the Truman and Benton area when the patrol car was hit by another vehicle.

The collision resulted in a secondary impact with a pedestrian.

The pedestrian died instantly.

Police say the police dog was also killed at the scene.

The officer was transported to hospital with serious injuries and later died in hospital.

Police say the driver of the other vehicle has minor injuries and is in custody for further investigation.

Police say the dead officer was a 20-year KCPD veteran and had been assigned to the canine unit for nearly 3 years.

Police say his canine partner was a KCPD veteran of about a year.

Several law enforcement agencies in the area have begun to offer their condolences to the KCPD.
