KMBC has an update tonight on a place where things have gone from bad to worse and how one Kansas City area doctor is still working to make a difference. Last fall, we told you the story of Dr. Ted Higgins and a surgical center he opened in Haiti. Haiti is a country in the throes of chaos, one in which Higgins has said there is “no government” right now. “The gangs have gotten stronger,” said Higgins, a surgeon based in Prairie Village. “We’ve seen that with more gang members across the country.” Higgins told the story of how those gangs had shot one of his fellow Haitian surgeons. The clinic is located about an hour east of the country’s capital. Higgins helped build it in 2016. He provides life-saving measures every day, but because of how much the gangs control the country, patients and supplies can’t get there. “And it’s a real shame because a lot of these patients die,” Higgins said. “You know, women who need to give need C-sections can’t reach us. We’ve seen that several times.” Work continues, but Higgins said now is the time for foreign intervention and for another country to step in and restore order. However, he acknowledges that the probability is low. “It’s like diving into a cold lake,” he said. “No one wants to be first in and everyone is waiting for someone to make a move.”
