Overland Park man sentenced to life for killing a teenager in Olathe

A Johnson County judge sentenced Matthew Bibee, Jr., to consecutive life terms for attempted capital murder and first-degree murder. Bibee Jr. was found guilty by a jury on those charges on October 28, 2022. He was convicted of killing 17-year-old Rowan Padgett, who was murdered in the 12300 block of South Mullen Court. He also shot an Olathe police officer. Bibee was shot by an Olathe police officer on March 31, 2019 after Bibee shot at the officer investigating an attempted theft auto near 127th Street and Brougham Drive. Bibee suffered a shrapnel wound to her wrist and was not bleeding. The officer was not injured. Three bullets damaged the police vehicle. The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office said the officer was justified in using force. Bibee also received 176 months for attempted first degree murder, 32 months for aggravated robbery, 12 months for battery on a law enforcement officer, six months for battery, 32 months for attempted aggravated robbery and six months for interfering with a law enforcement officer.
