History The Wichita State women’s tennis team eliminated Drake, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought doubles match at the Wichita Country Club. The doubles came in a tiebreaker and four of their six singles matches went the distance. The tandem of double n. 1’s Linwei Kong and Natsumiu Kurahashi prevailed 7-6 (2) tipping the balance in WSU’s favor. Both players also won their respective singles battles, Kong in straight sets and Kurahashi in threes, securing another two points. The visiting Bulldogs (2-2) made it 3-2 by winning a pair of three handlers on fields 1 and 4. Both of Drake’s players benefited from tiebreaker victories. All eyes turned to the two remaining flights, which departed late due to lack of court availability. At number 6, Harriet Hamilton left little to chance, sweeping her opponent, 6-1, 6-0 to officially end the game. Marlene Förster bounced back from a tough first set at No. 5 in singles to win 0-6, 7-6(3), 7-5. “It was a really good college tennis match,” said coach Colin Foster. “Obviously winning the doubles point was crucial. Lingwei and Natsu played a flawless tiebreak with the point on the line. that’s what you want. Harriet did so well playing confidently in doubles and singles. She knew the match was in singles play and has never backed down.” WSU (2-1) avenged a 2022 loss to Drake in Des Moines. The Shockers have won 18 of the last 19 meetings between the schools dating back to 2006. The Shockers continue their home the next two weekends against Abilene Christian (Friday, February 3, 2:00 p.m.) and UT Arlington (Saturday, February 11). Both games will take place on indoor courts at the Wichita Country Club. Admission is free.
