Slippery roads leading to slips, accidents throughout south central Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) — The freezing precipitation is causing traffic headaches throughout south-central Kansas with multiple crashes and slips reported. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Friday afternoon that it has investigated several incidents on Interstate 235 southbound between Broadway and K-96.

“The southbound lanes are blocked, causing severe congestion on (I-135 northbound,” said a message from KHP soldier Chad Crittenden. “Please avoid the area.”

Harvey County Emergency Management also advises drivers to exercise caution during their evening commute.

The agency said county dispatchers have received a number of reports of the ice-covered bridges. Hesston Police said there were several crashes and slips along I-135 at exit 40.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Harvey County and other parts of south central and southeastern Kansas until 10 p.m.

Separately, the KHP said a woman died of injuries sustained in a crash reported at about 3:15 p.m. on Interstate 135 near the 101st Street exit north of Valley Center. The KHP did not raise road conditions with the preliminary information provided about the crash, but the cause remains under investigation.
