The Different Types of Vapes Explained

Read Time:5 Minute, 21 Second

41 million people use vapes worldwide, according to a recent study on BBC news. Though the number of cigarette smokers is decreasing, the number of vapers has increased dramatically within the past 5 years. More and more people are trying to quit smoking, and to do so, turn to vaping.

When buying your first vape, you might be surprised to find out how many different types of vapes there are. Luckily for you, finding which one suits you is not a difficult task. Discover your perfect vape and start your vaping journey by reading more below.

Different Types of Vapes

Depending on what you’re using your vape for, there are different factors to consider. If you are looking for a nicotine vaporizer, there are four main types: Cig-A-Like, Vape Pen, Modified E-Cigarette, and Pod Mod.

If you are looking to buy a vape for cannabis or CBD use, there are different vapes to note. There are CBD vape pens, cannabis and THC oil pens, portable dry cannabis vapes, and desktop vapes. Though these are similar to vapes for nicotine, it’s important to find the vape for your specific needs.

The first vape was made in 2003, and since then the technology has improved immensely. The main thing to note is the 3 parts of a vape. First, the battery, which is the vape’s power source. There is an atomizer, which is the part that heats up the e-liquid and turns it into vapor. Lastly, the tank, which is where you put the e-liquid.

The two main vape tank styles are open and closed. A closed tank requires ready-made refills of e-liquid, which screw onto the vape’s battery. An open tank allows the e-liquid to be refilled manually, and also includes a removal mouthpiece. Both are popular, but the open tank is usually more cost-effective.

Cig-A-Like

Cig-A-Likes are one of the oldest models of vapes. They are primarily used as a transition for cigarette smokers to vapes. Though they are older, it does not mean they aren’t just as effective as newer models.

If you are brand new to vaping, this is a great model because of its simple design. It looks and feels like smoking a cigarette, helping to make the transition smoother. It also uses less e-liquid than other vape models but is still able to create powerful clouds.

It is very portable and can be used almost anywhere while still being discreet. It requires very little maintenance and is generally thought of as a “ready-to-go” vape.

Modified E-Cigarette

Modified E-Cigarettes, also known as “mods”, were created to give a more powerful and safe vaping experience. Before mods, vapers created modified vapes from flashlights. This proved to be more powerful, but also more dangerous.

The most noticeable characteristics of vape mods are the powerful clouds they produce and the firepower they hold. They are one of the most popular styles of vapes and are available in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors.

Pod Mod

Pod mods were created to combine the portability of the vape pens with the power of the mod system. They are often seen as an improved version of the cig-a-like and are the closest to smoking a cigarette.

Because of this, pod mods are one of the best types of vaping devices for people transitioning from smoking cigarettes. The mod allows easy vaping from strong e-juice nicotine levels, creating that similar sense of smoking.

Vape and Oil Pens

Vape pens are very similar to cig-a-likes, but are larger and include a more powerful battery for larger clouds and a better vaping experience.

Shaped like a traditional writing pen, they are very discreet and portable. Though they were first made for nicotine use, they have been altered to allow high-quality CBD vaping as well.

These usually have a tank that you fill with CBD e-juice instead of nicotine e-juice. Oftentimes, these are single uses, which can be wasteful.

This is very similar to cannabis and THC oil pens, which are filled with THC oil or distillate instead of e-juice. They are a newer model from the traditional vape pens and offer a very discreet vape.

This style is one of the most accessible because of how long it’s been in the market. When finding different vape shops either in-store or online, you can count on being able to find vape pens.

Portable Dry Cannabis Vapes

Unlike the previous vaporizers that use liquid or oil, dry cannabis vapes allow dry herb to be heated up into vapor. They contain an internal oven that heats the cannabis to a precise temperature.

They are small and portable making them convenient, but they have maintenance requirements. Because it is dry herb, it involves continuous cleaning of the main chamber, as well as the mouthpiece, depending on the vape’s structure.

Desktop Cannabis Vapes

These are the most powerful vapes. They can be used with dry herb or oil, but are generally used with dry herb because of how efficiently they extract the THC and CBD.

Desktop vapes use convection heating to turn the herb into vapor, and they can be one of the most intense vapes. They are not recommended for new vapers, because of the complicated set-up and the power involved.

However, it is possible to dial down the intensity on these vapes and to use whatever temperature you like. The vaper inhales through a tube or vape bag, unlike other vaporizers that use traditional mouthpieces.

Choosing Your Device

If you’ve decided you’re ready to become a vaper, choosing your device really comes down to how you are going to use it. If you know you want a small, portable device, that cancels out other styles of vapes.

If you are using it as a transition from smoking cigarettes, you can use pod mods or cig-a-likes as a starter. If you know you want it in a specific color, you can choose the models that come in a range.

Though there are many different types of vapes, instead of it being overwhelming, it allows you to have the variety you need to use it in whatever way works for you. Check out our other posts for more informative lifestyle articles.
