SEDGWICK COUNTY – A Kansas felon fleeing police died of injuries sustained in a crash shortly before 8:30 a.m. Him Thursday in Sedgwick County.
Police were in the Hydraulic and Wassal area of Wichita Thursday morning following up on information related to a vehicle involved in multiple burglaries in the Wichita area, according to Officer Trevor Macy.
An officer located the suspect vehicle and saw it commit a traffic violation in Washington and Wassal. The officer followed the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop in Pawnee and Washington.
The suspect immediately accelerated away from the officer heading northbound left of the centerline onto Washington.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the suspect vehicle, a 2005 Toyota Corolla driven by 59-year-old Kennedy Jewel Edmond of Wichita, was headed north on the 1700 block of South Washington in Wichita in an attempt to pass a 2010 Buick LaCrosse driven by the 67-year-old. – old Lamoine Hutton of Tulsa on right.
Edmond had previous convictions for manslaughter, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, burglary and drugs, according to the Kan. Department of Corrections. In September, Wichita police arrested Edmond on charges of aggravated battery and fleeing police, according to Sedgwick County arrest records.
The Toyota hit the Buick sideways and overturned. Edmond escaped from the vehicle, then collapsed behind a nearby truck. He was transported by EMS to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, according to Wichita Police Officer Trevor Macy.
Hutton was not injured. EMS observed a Toyota passenger identified as Donald Allen Maggard, 49, of Wichita. He refused treatment.

Police were in the Hydraulic and Wassal area of Wichita Thursday morning following up on information related to a vehicle involved in multiple burglaries in the Wichita area, according to Officer Trevor Macy.
An officer located the suspect vehicle and saw it commit a traffic violation in Washington and Wassal. The officer followed the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop in Pawnee and Washington.
The suspect immediately accelerated away from the officer heading northbound left of the centerline onto Washington.
The officer initiated a chase which was quickly stopped. After the chase ended, the suspect continued northbound on Washington at high speed.
Just north of Funston, the suspect vehicle attempted to pass another vehicle on the right. The suspect lost control of the vehicle when it hit the side of the vehicle he was attempting to overtake.
The suspect vehicle overturned and came to rest in the 1700 block of S. Washington, according to Macy’s.
The driver escaped from the vehicle, then collapsed behind a nearby truck. He was transported by EMS to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, according to Macy’s.
There was also a passenger in the suspect vehicle: he was seen at the scene by EMS but refused treatment. The driver of the civilian vehicle hit was unharmed.
Police have asked the Kansas Highway Patrol to take over the investigation of the crash for reasons of accountability and transparency.
