The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office once again receives the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Award

For more than a decade, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has been recognized for its outstanding work in helping improve traffic safety conditions throughout the area.

This year was no different as the Kansas Department of Transportation recently presented the department with the 2023 Traffic Safety Award. Each year, the department is involved in a litany of enforcement efforts including the annual KDOT Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), seat belts are for everyone (SAFE), extra holiday enforcement, child seat lanes and many more.

Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says the high level of involvement has almost made traffic enforcement “second nature” to the department.

The Sheriff’s Department also has a large presence on several traffic-related boards and committees at both the state and local levels. The Traffic Safety Award recognizes law enforcement agencies who go the extra mile to provide public education, enforcement, collaboration, and solutions to help improve traffic safety conditions within their communities.
