Wichita businesses celebrate Mardis Gras

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita businesses celebrated Mardis Gras on Tuesday. Mardis Gras is celebrated before the start of Lent.

KSN News visits The Donut Whole in East Douglas, where King Cake donuts have been added to the dessert selection.

Not far from there, Central Standard Brewing geared up for a Mardi Gras party. The location has been celebrating it for years and expected a good turnout.

“There’s a band playing tonight, the Moonpie Brass Band. They’ll take out a couple dozen players. We have a couple of food pop ups. You know, Mardis Gras is all about eating and drinking well. Black Fig Bakery is making muffuletta sandwiches, and Pee Wee and Sweets is making gumbo for us. And then we have a lot of drinks here. I mean, I think we’re the right place,” said Andy Boyd, director of operations at Central Standard Brewing.

Across town at Villa Luna Venue in West Central was a revival of popular Wichita eatery Red Bean’s Bayou Grill. It closed in 2014, but has reopened every year since then on Shrove Tuesday for an all-you-can-eat Cajun feast

“Every Shrove Tuesday, we celebrate their memory by bringing back Red Beans products, and we display them on a huge buffet, we also have pasta stations, dessert stations, kettles, we have an oyster cart. We bring back all the favorites Red Beans customers have come to love,” said Bill Rowe, owner of Blue Moon Caterers.
