LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State rebounded from an ECU loss with a wire-to-wire win against Tulsa, 84-68, last Wednesday at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers snapped a four-game losing streak against the Golden Hurricane with the win. Wichita State’s 84 points tied a season high. The Shockers led by as many as 16, shooting better than 45% from the field and converting 21 of 24 tries from the free throw line. It was another monster performance from the Wichita State bass post duo in Jane Asinde and Trajata Colbert. For the second time in their last three games Asinde and Colbert went 20-10 double-doubles. Asinde had a career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds and Colbert added 21 points and 14 rebounds. DJ McCarty rallied from a scoreless game at ECU with 13 points, four assists and four steals. Ambah Kowcun came off the bench to add 10 points on a pair of three-pointers.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Led by sophomore head coach Toyelle Wilson, SMU enters Wednesday matchup at 15-9 this season and 6-6 in American play. Wichita State won their first game of the season in Wichita, 73-65, on January 18. SMU is allowing just 58.6 points per game and opponents are shooting just 37.4% from the field. The Mustangs also average 8.6 steals per game on the defensive end. Jasmine Smith leads SMU in scoring (13.1) and assists (4.0), while she shoots 35.2% from beyond the arc. Chantae Embry is the second leading scorer and rebounder with 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds. Savannah Wilkinson pulls down a team-leading 7.9 rebounds to go with 11.5 points.

THE SERIES VS. SMU extension
Wichita State and SMU met 12 times before Wednesday’s matchup with the Shockers leading 7-5. The Shockers are 5-1 all-time against SMU in Wichita, but just 2-3 against the Mustangs in Dallas. Wichita State is looking for its first regular season series streak against SMU since 2018.

LAST MEETING
SMU jumped out to lead 24-15 after the first quarter, but a big second-half comeback gave Wichita State a 73-65 win on January 18 in Wichita. Wichita State outscored SMU, 39-23, after halftime. Wichita State shot 44% from the field and converted on 6 of 13 three-point attempts, while SMU missed 14 of its 17 attempts from beyond the arc. Shamaryah Duncan led four Shockers in double figures with 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Curtessia Dean added 16, followed by Jane Asinde with 15 and DJ McCarty with 14.

POWER OF PAINT
In Wichita State’s last seven games, the duo of Jane Asinde and Trajata Colbert have taken their game to another level. Asinde has four double-doubles and is averaging 17.6 points and 11.4 rebounds, while Colbert is playing some of the best basketball of her career. During that span Colbert has six double-doubles and is posting 17.0 points and 10.6 rebounds. Together they are responsible for 34.6 points and 22.0 rebounds in their last seven outings.

TRIS OF TALENTJane Asinde, DJ McCarty and Trajata Colbert are forming a powerful trio for the Shockers. All three average double-digits on the season and combine for 53.8% of Wichita State’s points on the offensive end. On the glass, they combine to pull down 22.2 rebounds per game. Defensively, the trio account for 61.9% (125 steals) of the team’s steals this season and 59.2% (45 blocks) of the team’s blocks.

RARE AIR ASINDEJane Asinde is one of only three players in the country averaging at least 10.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. DePaul’s Annesah Morrow and Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Alecia Westbrook are the only other players posting these stats in 2022-23.

SEE DOUBLE
Wichita State senior Jane Asinde is averaging a double-double in 26 games this season with 13.3 points and 10.8 rebounds. The Uganda native is on course to finish the season with top-10 rebounding in a single season. His current 10.8 boards per game would rank seventh in school history. She is also looking to become the first Shocker to average a double-double in a season since Antionette Wells during the 2006-07 season, when she recorded 13.0 points and 10.4 rebounds.

WANTED FOR THEFT
Junior guard DJ McCarty and senior forward Jane Asinde were nuisances on defense as they tackled offense for 25 games. McCarty has recorded at least one steal in all but five games, and has more than 14 steals in 25 games. His 50 steals are a team-high. Asinde is second on the team with 47 steals and averaging 2.04 steals per game and she has the most steals in 13 games this season. They rank 4th and 5th in Americans for steals per game.

COLBERT CASH Trajata Colbert has improved dramatically over the past two years on the free throw line. The Georgia native began her career shooting 42.1% as a freshman, 61.1% as a sophomore and 50.9% as a COVID sophomore. In 2021-22 she is shooting a career high 76.0% and so far through 26 games in 2022-23, she is 90 for 109 (82.6%). Colbert ranks fourth in the American in free throw percentage.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Through 26 games Wichita State ranks in the top 70 nationally in the following categories: No. 18 in rebounding (8.0), No. 22 in free throws made per game (15.19), n. #41 in offensive rebounds per game (14.0), #42 in free throw attempts per game (20.38), #59 in field goal percentage (37.5), #60 in rebounds defensive players per game (27.5) and #0.69 in free throw percentage (74.5). Jane Asinde ranks 12th nationally in rebounds per game, 26th in total rebounds, 24th in defensive rebounds per game and 27th in offensive rebounds.
