Woman in Kia survives being dragged eight miles under semi-truck, Kansas City police say

A woman in the Kansas City area survived a harrowing accident after her car was pulled miles by a semi-truck early Wednesday morning following an accident.

The accident began at approximately 3:30 am on January 25 on an on-ramp to Westbound I-435 in Leawood, Kansas.

435 and Lackman is not that close to 435 and the state line. What a terrifying situation. Hoping that the woman can be freed soon by first responders and she is not seriously injured. https://t.co/bvdJctuu3r

Police believe a semi-truck was traveling on a green light at a ramp to westbound I-435 on State Line Road to rejoin the interstate when a Kia Forte traveling south on State Line Road skidded through a red light in icy road conditions, hitting the trailer in front of the right rear wheel assembly.

According to the Kansas City Star, the driver of the truck later told police he was unaware that an accident had occurred.

Police say several 911 calls reported the truck pulling the silver Kia at around 3:40 a.m.

The driver of the truck continued approximately eight miles to I-435 and Lackman Road when the Overland Park Police Department arrived on the scene at approximately 3:46 am.

The 28-year-old Kansas City woman driving the Kia was hospitalized for tests, but was awake and talking to investigators at the scene.

The truck driver is cooperating with the police.

Initial reports identified the car as a Prius, but were later changed to show it was a Kia.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is encouraged to call the Leawood Police Department at 913-642-7700 or email at [email protected].
