Community Baby Shower returns to Duncan this April

January 30—In an effort to provide much-needed needs for families with children and babies, a variety of materials and items will be raffled off as local organizations unite to offer education, resources and support to community members and their children.

The annual event will set up supplies from 10am to noon April 15 at the Stephens County Fairgrounds.

Stephanie Red Elk, County Coordinator of Sooner SUCCESS, said Stephens and Jefferson County community baby shower workers are excited about this community event, as the baby shower helps keep little ones safe and healthy. The event is a combination of efforts between Sooner SUCCESS, OSU Extension, United Way of Stephens County, Stephens and Jefferson County Health Departments, Safe Care, Wichita Mountain Prevention Network and many other organizations.

Starting at 10am and continuing until noon, the baby shower event will feature different vendors, as well as the baby’s necessary needs.

According to Red Elk, team members are still seeking donations, as are vendors with educational information.

“The goal of the Community Baby Shower is to provide a free event that connects pregnant women and new parents or caregivers of children under the age of three with resources, support and education on how to keep their baby healthy and safe,” Red Elk said. “All are invited to attend.”

According to Red Elk, the event will also include a car seat check, along with a drug pickup that allows citizens to turn in unused or expired medications.

The Community Baby Shower will focus on providing information to parents and carers on the following topics: safe sleep, vaccinations, child seat safety, nutrition and more.

Red Elk said it has a variety of representatives but is currently still signing up vendors.

“Soon SUCCESS (helps) families who have a child with a special needs or medical issue,” she said. “OSU Extension will provide lessons on Safe Sleep and CPR.”
