KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Current announced today that the 10th overall pick of the 2023 NWSL Draft, Alexa Spaanstra, has signed a contract with the club through the 2024 season. Spaanstra is the second of two Kansas City current first-round picks. this year.
“Alexa is an exciting talent who has impressed us at the collegiate level and has continued to do so through the start of the preseason,” said general manager Camille Levin Ashton. “We are thrilled to have her join us in KC as she begins her professional career.”
Spaanstra comes to Kansas City from the University of Virginia, where he starred from 2018 to 2022. Starting his career off on the right foot, he led the team in goals (9) and assists (6) his freshman year, on the road for 37 career goals and 34 assists for the Cavaliers. During his collegiate career, Spaanstra earned All ACC Third team (2018), Second team (2019, 2022), and First team (2021) honors. She was also named to the ACC Championship All-Tournament team three times.
Internationally, Spaanstra has represented the United States in tournaments around the world, traveling with the US national team at the U17, U20 and U23 levels.
