Obituary for Joyce Hoskins

Joyce Lea (LaDuke) Hoskins, 83, of Eldon, Mo., formerly Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at Lake Regional Medical Center. Joyce was born on April 29, 1939, at home in Kansas City, Mo. She was the only child of the late Joseph and Maxine (Roblyer) LaDuke. She attended Milton Moore Elementary School in Kansas City. In June 1951 the family moved to Slater, Missouri and she graduated from Slater High School in 1957. On March 7, 1958, she married H. Eugene Akeman. A son and daughter were born of this union. Joyce received her Bachelor of Education from Central Methodist University in 1975. She taught kindergarten in New Franklin from 1975 to 1979. A move to Jefferson City in 1979 resulted in a change of teaching kindergarten and third grade to New Bloomfield. In 1991 she went to work for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Jefferson City, retiring in 2001. Joyce was a member of Community Christian Church where she was an emeritus emeritus, deacon, usher, and chair or committee member . Once a month, she and others were involved in feeding the Salvation Army residents at the shelter. She enjoyed being a substitute teacher and being with children. She was very much the caretaker and she loved to cook and bake. After her marriage to Milton F. Hoskins, they united their families and loved to travel mostly to visit their children. Survivors include: her husband of nearly 25 years, Milton Hoskins; her son, Kemp Akeman (Marty) of Rhome, Texas; stepdaughters Julie Hoskins (Geoff Shirley) of Greeley, Colorado, and Trish Hoskins (Matt DeVries) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; three siblings, Edward LaDuke (Betty) of Ft. Meyers, Fla., Jim LaDuke (Becky) of McPherson, Kan., and Larry LaDuke (Patti) of Eldon, Mo.; three grandchildren, Ryan Thomas of Columbia, Mo., Robert Akeman (Meghan) of Salem, Connecticut, and Rachel Horne (Jason) of Austin. Texas.; four grandchildren, Garrett, Bryn, and Kane Shirley of Greeley, Colorado, and Archer DeHoskins of Minneapolis, Minnesota; four great-grandchildren, Paige, Charlotte, Ruby and Mabel; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in her death by her beloved daughter, Karen Thomas; a nephew, Joseph Akeman; and her parents. The visit will be held from 10:00 to 11:00, Monday, January 30, 2023, at the Community Christian Church of Jefferson City. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 30, 2023, at Community Christian Church, Jefferson City with Reverends Craig Kirby-Grove and Don Carter officiating. In lieu of flowers, suggest memorial contributions to Community Christian Church, 409 Ellis Blvd, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
