Split on Final Day of ESU Classic for Hornet Softball | gas

The Emporia State softball team split up the final day of the ESU Classic on Monday.

Concordia-St. Paul took an early lead in the first game on an RBI single in the top of the second. Emporia State responded by taking advantage of a pair of Golden Bear errors in the bottom of the inning. Sophia Rockhold led off the inning with a too-short ground ball that was misplayed.

Alexis Dial then walked to put runners on first and second for Abbey Ward, who hit a two-run double to take third at the plate. She then scored when the catcher tried to throw it out of her going to third and the ball went into left field to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.

Concordia-St. Paul tied the game in the top of the quarter with a two-run homer, but Emporia State regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Ward reached on an error, went from first to third on a groundout, and scored on a Lexi Williams bunt. .

Bailey Flewelling added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when he drove in Haley Garnett with a single.

Sydney Righi went far in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Hornets lost game two, 5-0 to Missouri-St. Louis.

Emporia State (7-4) will be back in action this weekend at the Washburn Invite in Topeka. Game one will be against St. Cloud State on Friday, February 24 at 10:00 a.m. at Gahnstrom Field on the Washburn campus.
