The art contest in the KC area is for adults 65 years of age and older only

There’s a new art contest in the Kansas City area, and it’s for seniors only. Its goal is to showcase some of the best senior artists in the area. Jo Henderson, 81, likes to do needlework, but it can be incredibly time-consuming. She’s pretty good at it, too. One of her recent projects took over 500 hours to complete. That’s why she was thrilled when she heard about the Art is Ageless contest. “Simple pride. I want to show what I’ve done,” Henderson said. It is a competition sponsored by Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas. “Art is very important to us and to everything we do. It’s inspiring. He’s healing,” Executive Director Tim Allin said. Artists must be at least 65 years old to participate. Participants compete in nine categories such as painting, drawing and sculpture. Chosen winners get their work featured in a national calendar and will be part of a national art exhibition. Some of these artists hope their work will be a message to other elders.
