Two suspects arrested in Crawford Co. murder

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Pittsburg Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a homicide in Crawford County. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, the Pittsburg Police Department received a 911 call from Collin Pal Gebford, 43, that someone had been shot, according to the KBI. The victim, identified as David Duane Mays, 51, of Weir, Kan., was located by police on the roadway near 1023 N Main in Pittsburg, Kan. with a fatal shot to the chest.

At approximately 3:00 pm, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office asked the KBI Crime Scene Response Team and the investigation. The team determined that there was an altercation resulting in gunfire.

Gebford was incarcerated in the Crawford County Jail and charged on suspicion of attempted first-degree premeditated murder and felony murder.

Another suspect, Travis Conness, 32, of Neosho, Mo., was on the run but was eventually located and arrested without incident. He is incarcerated in the Crawford County Jail and also charged with attempted first-degree premeditated murder and manslaughter.

The autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday 21 February.

The investigation is ongoing.
